Donald Trump has lived “The Big Lie” long enough. The Big Lie itself has lived far longer than it had any right to live considering the fact that it’s one hundred percent pure bullshit. It’s absurd that such a thing as “The Big Lie” is even a “thing” to begin with! But then, it’s absurd that Donald Trump was ever POTUS to begin with. It’s absurd that Trump remains part of our national conversation. Even more absurd that so much of the Republican Party is now more devoted to Trump than ever. But, here’s a stone cold fact: Donald Trump is not going to live forever. At some point, he will cease to be. The Big Lie will succumb to The Big Die.
Trump is the poster boy for what “unhealthy” looks like. Nancy Pelosi famously called him “morbidly obese”. Lots of newspapers rushed to Trump’s defense when she did that – pointing to the official record of Trump’s last White House physical. Officially, Trump is 243 pounds, six-foot-three with a BMI (body mass index) of 30.4 – officially within the “obese” category. But, not officially “morbidly obese”.
The Big Liar
But, remember, Trump is a notorious liar. He lies about things that are easy to challenge – like his weight. It’s entirely possible (if not likely) that the very vain old man who lied over 30,000 times during his presidency was lying yet again. Those of us with functioning eyeballs know that 243 is being generous to Trump’s fragile ego.
So is “obese”.
Trump may be able to lie to the press and the American public, but he can’t lie to biology and body chemistry. At some point, Trump’s unhealthy lifestyle will catch up to him catastrophically.
That will be bad for Trump but even worse for the rest of the Republican Party.
Right now, Trump’s the glue holding the Republican conspiracy together. Even most of his primary opponents care more about Trump’s fortunes than their own. This is the big, honking downside to needing a cult of personality to run your politics.
Succession
What happens though, when the personality at the center of a personality cult stops being? What if they die without any sort of succession protocol? Criminals like Trump resist creating succession plans because they know it’ll just embolden their adult children to murder them.
Regardless of how afraid he is of dying, Trump will die. And then his base will have to reconfigure their whole universe. Trump hasn’t picked a successor because he can’t envision one. That’s how sociopaths are! In Trump’s mind, he’s magically going to live forever.
His base – needing to deify Trump – believes the same thing.
Too bad for them all they’re as stupid as they are wrong.
Trump’s Grip
Here’s the thing though: Trump’s grip on the GOP transcends his base. It started well before Trump had that base reliably at his disposal. It started in 2016 when the entire Republican leadership agreed to keep it a secret that “Putin pays Rohrbacher and Trump – swear to God” (to quote current Speaker Of The House Kevin McCarthy back in 2016).
This has always been about treason first.
When Trump succumbs to The Big Die – and prosecutors turn their focus on everyone not Trump, many of them will use that opportunity to blame Trump for everything – especially treason.
Sorry to sound morbid, but I’m in the morbid business. Dropping dead will be the first (and last) patriotic act of Donald Trump’s whole life.
