It’s a stone cold fact: our news media now takes treason for granted. Just as true, they’ve been taking it for granted from even before Trump became POTUS.
From the beginning, Trump has fawned over Vladimir Putin like a groupie fellating a rock star. Has anyone in main stream news media ever done a deep dive into this flashing red light? In fact, our news media has reported again and again on Trump’s treasonous behavior – and then shrugged it off.
Remember Helsinki? When Trump did everything but literally blow Putin on the world stage?
Our news media has asked two questions all along – without the least inclination to answer them: 1) what is Putin’s strange hold over Trump, and 2) what is Trump’s strange hold over the GOP? Hmmmmm… You’d think a journalist would see a parallels – and connections where, clearly, they are! How much contact did Hilary Clinton’s campaign have with Russia back in 2016? Zero.
How much contact did Trump’s campaign have with them?
It’s a trick question. The answer should be exactly the same. Zero. But it wasn’t and that was not an accident. It wasn’t normal. And it wasn’t legal either.
Federal Law & Foreign Governments
Federal law prohibits contributions, donations, expenditures(including independent expenditures) and disbursements solicited, directed, received or made directly or indirectly by or from foreign nationals in connection with any federal, state or local election. Those donations and contributions don’t have to be money. They can be other things of value.
Like information. And – when a foreign government like Russia spends money on an intelligence operation like this – they’re making independent expenditures on a candidate’s behalf.
But, let’s go further. The old way of thinking would insist that treason can only really happen in war time. I guess that means if Russia hasn’t formally declared war or fired a missile at us then nothing Trump did with them could be treasonous.
Anyone believing you need bombs and bullets flying to make it a war is going to lose every war they fight going forwards.
If Russia could turn off our electric grid right now? They’d do it – and we’d be forced to sue for peace (if we couldn’t get the power back on). We’ve known for years that Putin wants literally to destroys our democracy.
Or turn our form of government into his.
Pro-Putin Republicans?
How can there be “pro-Putin Republicans”? Funny thing? It turns out, the whole party’s been pro-Putin for eons – and the reason we don’t know about it is that the GOP deliberately kept it secret from us. Even funnier? Our news media reported this – and has done almost no follow up!
You know, it’s kinda like they’ve been taking treason for granted all along!
On May 17, 2017, Adam Entous reported in the Washington Post about a recording he’d heard of a meeting between Republican leaders nearly a year before – June 25, 2016. Former Speaker Of The House Kevin McCarthy exited one meeting and entered a second meeting. In the first, our intelligence community warned McCarthy and other members of Congress that Putin was actively trying to undermine Ukraine’s fragile, new democracy.
“Putin Pays Rohrbacher And Trump”
McCarthy left that meeting and, as he entered the second – a gathering of Republican leaders – he said out loud “There’s two people I think Putin pays – Rohrbacher and Trump – swear to God!”
For starters, that was an odd thing to say about the man your party’s about to nominated to be POTUS. It suggests that your candidate has been compromised by a hostile foreign leader. If your candidate owes Putin money, then Putin can control your candidate. That would make your candidate a grave threat to America’s national security.
None of that’s rocket science or hyperbole.
It gets worse though. McCarthy said two names: Trump and Rohrbacher. Everyone in the room knew that California rep Dana Rohrbacher was Putin’s favorite Congressman. Nobody there would have argued the point. But Trump?
No one defended Trump either. Not a single voice disputed McCarthy’s terrible claim. In fact, there was nervous laughter; that’s why McCarthy added “Swear to God!” In other words, “I’m not making this up, guys!”
Then Speaker Of The House Paul Ryan stepped forward and insisted everyone present keep this terrible secret a secret. “No leaks. . . . This is how we know we’re a real family here.”
No leaks? About the fact that your presidential candidate poses a grave national security threat?
Just after Entous published his piece in the WaPo, a few “intrepid” reporters asked McCarthy about it. McCarthy insisted he was
just kidding. Uh huh.
Did the press follow up beyond nodding in acceptance – that McCarthy was kidding about a secret that they were sworn to keep? Of course not!
In one fell swoop, the news media answered every question they ever had about Trump and his party. And then they turned up their nose at it.
They’d already taken treason for granted.
