In the next week, ex-president and lifetime criminal Donald Trump will have two huge cases before the Supreme Court. The weird thing is, they’re connected in essential ways. The even weirder thing? Our inept news media hasn’t seen or made the connections. But the two cases ARE connected – and the fact that no one’s connecting those dots and screaming about them? That’s our news media continuing to fail at covering the biggest story of their lives.
One of the most agonizing parts of living through the extended Trump news cycle is the myriad ways our inept news media keep extending that cycle. Blinded by their insistence that “both sides do it”, America’s news media have equated Democrats acting politically with Republicans acting criminally for a political purpose.
Those two things are not the same.
Trump At The SCOTUS
In Trump’s first legal case – due to be argued this week – the SCOTUS will hear arguments about whether insurrectionist Trump should remain on Colorado’s Republican Primary ballot.
The US Constitution states clearly in article three of the 14th Amendment that if you’ve previously taken an oath to uphold and defend the Constitution – but then betrayed that oath and the Constitution – you cannot run for office. That also applies if you give “aid or comfort” to insurrectionists.
Trump has openly, vigorously and unashamedly given aid and comfort to every convicted insurrectionist. It’s all on the record. The argument should be over the instant it starts.
The second case will begin by Monday. Trump will file his appeal of the DC Circuit Court’s beautifully written, total smackdown of his bullshit immunity claims. Trump insists that presidents have magical immunity powers. In particular, powers that prevent criminal prosecution for criminal behavior. You know, like insurrection! And treason.
Trump The Insurrectionist
It isn’t up for discussion whether or not Trump’s an insurrectionist. Just like it isn’t (and never was) up for discussion whether or not Trump’s a racist. Even if one wanted to fudge the “is he an actual insurrectionist?” question, Trump still can’t run (per the Constitution) because he openly and unashamedly aided and abetted the insurrectionists.
First, Trump did nothing to stop them on January 7, 2021. Then, he vowed to pardon every insurrectionist behind bars. If that ain’t aiding and abetting them, what is?
Ya don’t think at least one of the nine members of the current SCOTUS hasn’t connected those dots themselves?
I bet EVERY current Supreme Court member has connected those dots – and sees this picture for what it is. The question is, what do they want from it? Our SCOTUS should want even-handed justice and adherence to the rule of law. And the Constitution.
A Broken Thing
Ah, but our current Supreme Court is a broken thing. First, Mitch McConnell denied Merrick Garland a hearing. Then he and Trump shoved Amy Coney Barrett down our throats AFTER Trump had lost the election. And, meanwhile Clarence Thomas and Sam Alito both have demonstrated staggering corruption.
Donald Trump befuddles our news media. Always has. A few journalists understand how to handle Trump and his lying, deceitful minions. You cut them off. You challenge everything they say right down to the punctuation. The last thing you do is allow them to use your microphone and camera as platforms from which to lie.
Better still, in addition to denying a liar the chance to lie, aggregate the liar’s story. How long did it take America’s news media to finally agree – and say out loud – that Trump lied more than any other political figure ever? More than a year!
Trump repeatedly lied to our news media in obvious ways. Take the size of his inauguration crowd. He lied right to their faces yet none of them – at that point – would call him what he was: a liar! By the same token, that same liar has maintained an unnatural relationship with Vladimir Putin. So has the rest of his political party! Strangely, the Party of ReagenAnd imagine reporting how the Republican Party – under that same influence – now deny Ukraine aid without connecting the most obvious dots of all.
The Dots Connect to Spell…
“TREASON”.
Funny thing? Our news media tosses that word around all the time now. “Fascist”, too. And “Nazi”. Used to be, our news media would call those words “hyperbole”. Now they’re all quite acceptable. Because even our news media can’t deny their accuracy.
True fact: those words didn’t just become accurate. They were accurate all along. The people using the words early on? They were right. The news media who refused to accept that those words were true? They’re all still working at most of the same places! Making new mistakes now – refusing to connect dots that, really, already connect!
Will anyone in our news media connect those dots themselves? I hope you understand if I don’t hold my breath.
